Chapter Forty Nine

“Why aren’t you fighting?” Riss punches my chest – it’s an honest to God punch – and she glares at me. “I know you’re holding back. Are you just trying to trick him? Is this strategy? Or is it gloating?”

I lean back against the cage as the doc pinches shut the wound above my eye. It’s mid-way through the fight, and the ref forced a time-out because of blood on the mat. Too much blood on the mat.

“I can glue it, son, or I can suture it,” he says, voice gruff. Why is it doctors at cage fights always have gruff voices?

“The glue will come apart,” I say, shaking my head. “Sew it, mate.”

“I can numb—”

“No!” I bark at him. “No fucking shot! Just bloody close it, fuck-in’ ’ell, you talkative cunt.” The doctor just grumbles, but starts to disinfect my skin.

I can’t keep my right eye open because of all the blood, and I need that bleeding to fucking stop, but I am not taking a God damned numbing shot. That shit will completely fuck with my reflexes and balance.

When part of your face feels like it doesn’t exist, yeah, that fucks you up.

Riss is knelt between my legs, looking up at me with a strange mixture of worry and anger on her face.

She winces when I do, at the moment the doc pushes a needle through my skin. It’s a sting that’s intense, but only for a flash of a second, and then my pumping adrenaline drowns it out.

“I know you can fight better than this,” Riss says intensely. “You can fucking beat this guy. I watched enough of your fights to know you can beat this guy.”

“Malone’s good,” I say. “I told you, Riss, he’s one of the best.”

“And you’re better! You’re not giving it your all. Get your head in the game, Liam. What’s going on with you? You got a distraction, then let it out. Tell me! Let me hold on to it. I’ll hold it for you, and then you go take care of business and then I’ll give it back.”

I smirk at her. “You sound like a coach.”

“And you’re fighting like you need one!”

There’s a moment of silence, and I’m shocked by the depth of Riss’ emotion. She really wants me to fight.

It’s a strange feeling, knowing someone is rooting for you. Not because they’re a fan of the blood you shed, the bones you break, but because they care about your wellbeing.

First time I ever experienced anything like it. Coach back home kept it distant and impersonal. Riss? She’s crawled right up under my skin. She’s inside me now. A part of me.

“Riss,” I say, taking her head in my hand. I pull her toward me. I know my breath must stink, a mixture of the rubbery mouth guard and my own dehydration, but I don’t care right now. “Riss,” I say, voice quiet. “I love you.”

“Focus!” she shouts, slapping my head. I grin at her. I love this girl.

But I know that she is too smart to not start to see through this.
